The problem

Heath Harrison felt frustrated. The Director of Loss Prevention for JRN, Inc., a 154-unit KFC franchise, knew he was dealing with restaurant employee theft, but he didn’t know the best way to look for it. His loss prevention tool was antiquated and would only spit out weekly reports – not the daily, up-to-date data he needed to investigate theft cases and coach underperforming staff members. All of these headaches also cost Heath a lot of time. He would spend up to an hour per case, pulling and analyzing multiple reports from different systems trying to get the complete picture.

The solution

Heath knew there had to be a better way. He decided to turn his frustration into action by searching for a solution at an annual KFC convention and trade show. Delaget – and its loss prevention solution Delaget Guard – immediately caught his eye. Delaget Guard is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution that reduces loss to employee theft and error by using proprietary algorithms to find exceptions in restaurant data, prioritizing those exceptions by monetary impact, and recommending specific actions restaurant managers can take to reduce loss and better train employees.

“Right away, I noticed that Delaget Guard was simple and easy to use. Everything I need to look for as a loss prevention professional is right there – drive through gaps, low dollar transactions, manager deletes, and more. I can also see historical data and day, week, period, and year views. I couldn’t get that from any other software I’ve seen,” said Heath.

“But what really sold me was Delaget’s customer service. When I call anyone from Delaget, I get an answer quickly. I’m actually talking to a real human. Delaget cares about my business,” he added.

The outcome

Within the first five minutes of JRN’s onboarding with Delaget, Heath and his team spotted employee theft.

“When we logged in, we saw a checklist alert about suspicious manager delete activity. After we drilled down, we realized that four-to-five percent of the manager’s transactions were manager deletes. We pulled up the ticket number, cross referenced it with video, spotted the manager stealing, and terminated the employee the very next day. It was that easy,” said Heath.

In fact, since Heath and his team implemented Delaget Guard restaurant employee theft prevention a year ago, they’ve caught 100 people who were stealing – some of whom were stealing into thousands of dollars.

“With Delaget Guard, you catch one thief, it pays for itself for the rest of the month. We’re now able to invest in our bottom line – instead of losing money to theft. We can invest in remodels, new technology and equipment, raises, and bonuses. That money is so beneficial when it goes to our bottom line,” said Heath.

Delaget Guard has also helped Heath and his team create a culture of results at JRN.

“The word is starting to get out to employees. They all know about Delaget Guard now, and they see their managers using it. They don’t want a low ranking or to have negative coaching notes. Employees want to be on top and to improve. This is helping drive a positive store culture,” said Heath.

There’s also friendly competition among stores.

“Every store is ranked from 1 to 154, and the staff is constantly comparing themselves to other stores and wanting to be the best,” said Heath.

The JRN team is now able to quickly pinpoint successful employees and stores – and coach underperforming ones in just minutes a day. No more frustrating report pulling or switching between several systems.

Heath added, “We’re now able to drive a more positive culture in our restaurants and build the brand. With Delaget Guard and KFC, your brand will get stronger.”
